Military Vehicle Display

Military Vehicle Display

Military Vehicles will be on display at the Mt. Angel Post Office on Friday, located by the Harvest Monument and in the Legion Hall Parking lot on Saturday, which is located by the Car Show and St. Mary Church.

A group of local collectors share their military vehicle hobby with interested Festival goers.  Several people from the Mount Angel area belong to the Military Vehicle Collectors Club of Portland.

Often included in the display are a couple of tanks, halftracks, humvees and more from WWII era through Vietnam era.  Enjoy a conversation with their owners and find out more about why the Stuart Tank is the Cadillac of the military.

Mount Angel Abbey Museum

Mount Angel Abbey Museum
Local history and local kitsch. A fun little museum with some oddities and history.

You will find here everything from the North American mammal collection, to what is believed to be the world’s largest porcine (from a hog) hairball.  A Clark Griswold – must see! Also found in our museum are the items such as antique liturgical vestments, American civil war memorabilia and natural history artifacts, just to name a few.

Open to all between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm Thursday through Sunday.

Free bus rides up the Abbey hill are available behind the bandstand on Saturday and Sunday, between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.

The museum entry is located to the north of the Abbey Church.

  • Local favorites such as Fish Tacos, Marionberry Cobblern and Russian foods

Located in the Mount Angel Festhalle, 500 S Wilco Highway, the Oktoberfest Biergarten.

The interesting little museum is open all four days of Oktoberfest from 11 am until 6 pm and throughout the year normal hours are from 11 am until 3 pm on the first and third Fridays and the second and fourth Saturdays every month.

Families welcome; the children will love it. It is FREE!

  • Hay Maze:  Run through the bales in the timeless joy of a Hay Maze
  • Pony rides:  Available for the younger kids – let them try horseback for the first time.
  • Petting Zoo:  Your child can interact with the 4-H Group Aumsville Ranch Hands and their tremendous variety of farm animals, chickens, cows, rabbits, sheep and more. Hands-on fun with some great older kids to answer questions for your children (or even adults!).

The shuttle departs from behind the Bandstand about every 15 minutes between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Take the short ride – less than 5 minutes – to enjoy the view from the bluff where Mount Angel gets it’s name. Stroll the quiet contemplative grounds of Mount Angel’s Abbey and Seminary.

The Silver Trolley will be shuttling from Silverton to Mt. Angel Oktoberfest with drop off near the Biergarten.

The route of the shuttle is: From North First Street in Silverton (vacant lot off Bowtie Lane by Roth’s Fresh Markets) to Garfield Street near the Biergarten Festhalle in Mt Angel.

The Prostgarten is a hidden treasure in downtown Mount Angel.  Located behind the Glockenspiel and its sponsor, Columbia Bank, and a row of food booths is this gem. Inside the Prostgarten you will hear gentle acoustic accordion music that allows for easy conversation.  Come inside and  get a glass of German wine or bier, bring your treats from the outside food booths and relax.   The Prostgarten offers free admittance and is a locals’ secret place to meet with friends and family.

Wiener Dog Races are a highlight on Saturday and Sunday of Oktoberfest. These fierce competitors go head-to-head or perhaps head-to-tail on Saturday and Sunday during the festival.

They line up in the starting box and tear down the race field at tremendous speed!
Sunday’s racing completes the competition when they compete for the Northwest Championship.

Doppelbock @ Alpinegarten

Doppelbock began a few years ago as a last-minute replacement band for the Leavenworth Oktoberfest. They have since been surprising and entertaining Oktoberfest audiences throughout Oregon and Washington. Blending the traditional German/Polka/Yodeling sound of Doug Stickler and his accordion, with long-time Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts guitarist Rouke van der Veen’s rock and roll roots, they created what some call Polka Rock. Completing the sound are Lugnut luminaries Matt Kenney on bass and Jim Parker on drums, with standout saxophone work from Brian McDonald. Their goal is to boldly go where no accordion has gone before.

Why the name “S-Bahn”? S-Bahn is the commuter train that connects cities in Germany with their suburbs. The S-Bahn connects people, it brings people together. Singer and accordionist Richard Tyce founded the S-Bahn in Vancouver in the 90′s. Highlights for S-Bahn include the “Fall Crawls” during which the S-Bahn tours the Oktoberfest circuit – including the super popular Leavenworth Washington and Mt. Angel Oregon Oktoberfests.

The Tirolean Dancers started in the 1970′s, today they continue their tradition.  Through the years they have garnered new members, The Tiroleans continue to perform and share the joy of traditional German dance.  Enjoy the traditional and elegant dances, and the impressive Schuplattler performed by the gentleman – it becomes quite acrobatic and competitive!

They were so great, we all said, “how do we get them back next year?”  The Chardon Polka will be bringing their best to Mt. Angel. Upbeat music and great fun old polka delivered in a not so traditional style.

The traditional Polkas sometimes morph into hip-hop/rock renditions of the same songs.  Some comedic renditions of oddball favorites, bizarre audience participation songs, and even polka-rock covers of anything from Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” to Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” to Lady Ga Ga’s “Bad Romance”!

The Weingarten and Biergarten just won’t be the same after this…

Evening Prayer with Benedictine Sisters & Vespers at Mount Angel Abbey

Join the Sisters at Queen of Angels Priory or the Monks of Mount Angel Abbey for Evening Prayer.  All are welcome to attend.

Evening Prayer with Benedictine Sisters starts at 5:00 PM and take place in the Chapel, located on the second floor of the Hospitality Center.

Bell for Vespers with the Monks rings at 5:15 PM, with Vespers beginning at 5:20 PM in the Abbey Church. Pick up a prayer book in the vestibule as you enter.

Direct from Germany for over 20 years, this group of musicians come from Bavaria, and the banks of the Danube River. Michael–  The newest member on keyboards .  Andi – the band leader singer and bass guitar, Andi plays together with his Dad and brother Harry in top German Bands. Harry – Drummer extraordinaire, travels worldwide and performs with several international groups – like the Sarah Brightman International Tour, still makes time to come to Mount Angel! Thomas– clarinet and saxophone, plays with several bands and has been at Mount Angel for many years. Hugo – the man with the golden trumpet – ‘Can conjure up a polka from a hosepipe!’ Hugo plays with a Big Band in Germany called Opus I. Halef – lead guitar and newest member of the band, a professional musician for 25 years.

The Tirolean Dancers started in the 1970′s, today they continue their tradition.  Through the years they have garnered new members, The Tiroleans continue to perform and share the joy of traditional German dance.  Enjoy the traditional and elegant dances, and the impressive Schuplattler performed by the gentleman – it becomes quite acrobatic and competitive!

The European Take-out plays Oktoberfest plus other European based music  and favorite American standards for your listening and dancing pleasure. This includes dances such as the polka, waltz, fox trot, swing, reinlander, county western, rumba, and of course the ever popular Chicken Dance.  We also have easy dances we teach for audience participation.
